Kim Jong-un claims that North Korea COVID-19 cases remained zero. Moreover, sources from North Korea claimed that victims of the deadly illness have been left to starve in “quarantine camps”. These reports circulated on November 3.
Tim Peters, a Christian activist of Helping Hands Korea, told the South China Morning Post reports where patients are suffering at camps near the Chinese border.
In his statement, the Government does not provide enough food and medicine to those inside the camps.
He also added that the primary needs for the quarantined persons inside the camps were provided independently by their relatives, keeping them alive.
Moreover, the relatives of the patients had been purchasing medicines sold in the market grounds or even herbal home remedies gathered from mountainsides.
David Lee on "quarantine camps."
David Lee, a pastor who works with North Korean defectors in Seoul, also had his statement on North Korea's situation.
Lee stated that refugees who kept in contact with relatives were forced into isolation or boarded up in their homes without food or other support and left to die.
He added that the North Korean officials lacked the means to track the spread of the illness. COVID-19 is known inside the country as the "ghost disease." Also, North Korea does not have any proper testing kits for patients with suspected cases.
North Korean Government on "Intensified Surveillance"
The first reported COVID-19 suspect of North Korea was reported on July 26. Then the Government identified the COVID-19 suspect as a defector returnee from South Korea.
Moreover, Kim Jung-un insisted on having no reports of confirmed cases on his speech on October 10 in a Military parade with thousands in attendance.
Days after the speech, the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded North Korea's 5,368 "suspected" COVID-19 cases.
The Government denied the record and insisted that the number was a product of "intensified surveillance," not COVID Positive patients.
